Rossport is a small village on the old section of Highway 17, called the Rossport Loop, just 2 hours east of Thunder Bay. Originally a permanent Indian village named Bawgawashinge (Shallow Water), it was discovered by the Voyageurs in the late 1600's. The deep water harbour is well sheltered from the open lake by a series of islands. There is a large sandbar, connecting the mainland to Nicol Island. In 1884, the Canadian Pacific Railway was completed through Rossport, opening an avenue for shipping goods in and out. At this time, the village became a commercial fishing port. Today Rossport has about 100 residents and their docking facilities make it a popular haven for pleasure craft as well as the departure point for sports-minded people who wish to fish, hunt, rockhound, or just explore and enjoy.
